From bland brick box to glazed showstopper!

Khoury Architects created a contemporary home with an abundance of natural light and increased accommodation.

Khoury Architects’ modern interior design of Wentworth Road in Birmingham is covered in the March 2014 Issue of Ideal Home.

Even though Natalie & Ragi Singh’s project ran beyond their deadline due to issues with builders, they have achieved their desired outcome: to create a contemporary home with an abundance of natural light and increased accommodation. We have some words of wisdom which will ensure you avoid the issues encountered in the Homebuilding & Renovating article “After the Storm”:

In spite of the stormy experience with their builders, the outcome for Ragi and Natalie Singh has certainly been positive as they now live in an exceptional home: “The galleried entrance is fabulous and the courtyard is a favourite with the children. We certainly have the wow factor we’d hoped for. Even more importantly, every bit of the design works.”

  • When sourcing a builder, look for an established firm with a strong track record – even better if they are recommended.
  • Be realistic when you get the tender figures back from builders and go through them objectively with your architect who will advise you.
  • Don’t automatically go for the lowest tender figure as items could be omitted without you realising.
  • Be wary of sourcing elements such as kitchens, bathrooms and glazing yourself because you will be liable if something goes wrong.
  • Communicate with the builder through your architect – that way the architect can administer the contract, advise you accordingly and ensure costs are controlled.
