Early design decisions such as building orientation and spatial arrangements can be influenced by energy saving mechanisms such as the use of natural daylight, beneficial solar gain and thermal mass.

A desire to reduce energy consumption can lead to specification of certain materials such as triple glazed windows, a highly insulated building envelope and green roof systems.

The extent to which you adopt sustainable technologies largely depends on how committed you are to the reduction of CO2 emissions. In some cases, fixtures and fittings may be de-prioritised in favour of renewable systems such as Air Source Heat Pumps and mechanical ventilation with geothermal heat pipes.
